Dos Pueblos softball picked up a 6-1 win over Santa Barbara High on Friday to cap off a season sweep.

“This was a very competitive game today,” Chargers coach Mike Gerken said. “Hats off to Santa Barbara who really competed today. This was one of our better hitting games and their defense never broke.

“Our defense continues to shine for us. The infielders and pitchers are really in sync with each other right now. It’s fun to watch.”

The Chargers started fast with three runs in the first inning thanks to RBI hits from Zella Cassidy, Kacey Hurley and Brooklyn Hedricks.

After both teams were held in check over the next two innings, Anastasia Brunner, who went 2-for-3, sent a long two-run homer over the right-field fence to expand the Dos Pueblos lead out to 5-0.

“Stasia’s ball might be one of the deepest balls I’ve ever seen hit in a softball game,” Gerken said. “It was an absolute moon shot that went over the walkway in right.”

The Dons answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a run of their own. However, that proved to be the only run that they got for the rest of the day.

The final score of the game came on an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Cassidy to score Kylie Pearce.

Georgia Wilson and Kaitlyn Ashby combined for the Dos Pueblos pitching duties, allowing just four hits across seven innings.

For the Dons, Alleya Zaragoza went 2-for-2 and Laila Hernandez added a double.

“I am so proud of my players today,” Dons coach Julie Kittle said. “We came off a tough 1-18 loss against DP on Tuesday and they showed up and fought.

“We worked hard this week in practice and knew we could hold them to fewer runs today and wanted to make it a competitive game. It’s always high energy for the crosstown games.

“The girls are improving every week and we are gelling as a team. We hope to keep the momentum going throughout the season. We plan on surprising a few teams.”

The Dons will take on Buena next week while the Chargers face off against Rio Mesa.
