A Sunday night fire at a mini-storage facility in northeast Santa Maria remained under investigation on Monday.

At approximately 8:23 p.m. Sunday, members of the Santa Maria Fire Department were dispatched to Canyon Self Storage,, 930 N. Noble Way, off Carlotti Drive, Battalion Chief Anthony Morales said.

The first arriving crew found a large amount of smoke coming from multiple units. The fire was contained in one section of storage units, but threatened several others nearby, Morales added.

“This was a labor-intensive operation with crews making an aggressive fire attack preventing further extension to uninvolved exposures,” Morales said.

The battle included five Santa Maria Fire engine companies, a truck and a battalion chief.

“Due to the nature of the fire and the dense materials in several storage units involved, three additional engine companies were requested,” Morales said.

Two engineers from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and one from Cal Fire also were requested to assist at the scene.

Two additional engine companies also were dispatched to handle other calls in Santa Maria while the city’s firefighters focused on the blaze.

The fire was contained at 9:46 p.m., but firefighters remained at the mini storage facility to conduct extensive overhaul operations, Morales said.

An investigator responded to the scene to begin trying to determine how the fire started.

The incident caused an unknown monetary loss, Morales said Monday.

Canyon Self Storage sits at the end of a cul-de-sac with the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Maria office and North American Fire Hose facility near the intersection of Noble and Carlotti Drive.
