The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office charged a Goleta man with murder on Friday in connection with a fatal stabbing in Old Town Wednesday morning.
Marino Luis Diaz, 42, faces charges of first-degree murder, a special allegation of using a deadly weapon (a knife), and aggravating factors.
The sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau identified the homicide victim as Efrain Alvarado Morales, 57, of Goleta.
Deputies responded to an emergency call in the area of Carson Street, between Pine and Magnolia avenues, and found Morales’ body in a parking area at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick said deputies found a man a couple blocks away who had been injured, and he was detained as a “person of interest” in the killing.
Deputies took Diaz into custody at Fairview Avenue and Carson Street Wednesday, according to jail booking logs.
He was formally arrested at 7:51 p.m., Zick said.
Diaz remained in custody without bail at Santa Barbara County Jail on Friday.
The District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Diaz Friday, and Superior Court officials continued his arraignment hearing to Monday.
The criminal complaint accuses Diaz of a crime involving “great violence, great bodily injury, threat of great bodily harm or other acts disclosing a high degree of cruelty, viciousness, or callousness” and a victim who was particularly vulnerable.
“The manner in which the crime was carried out indicates planning, sophistication or professionalism,” the District Attorney’s Office alleges.
