Local beaches have been packed lately due to the hot and sunny weather, and more beachgoers equals more trash.

To help change that equation, Explore Ecology will host a beach cleanup event, 10 a.m.-noon Sunday, Aug. 9 at Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry’s Beach) in Santa Barbara.

“Let’s pick up litter and put it where it belongs this Sunday,” organizers said.

Volunteers should meet outside the Watershed Resource Center (blue building) to sign in and pick up cleanup supplies if needed. Then head to the beach, the parking lot, or nearby trails to search for trash and protect Arroyo Burro Beach.

While there, participants can visit the Watershed Resource Center, 10 a.m.-noon to learn how actions on land affect the health of waterways.

Also, coming up is Coastal Cleanup Day, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 19.

With coastal and inland sites ranging from Carpinteria to Jalama, there’s a cleanup site for everyone, Explore Ecology said.
