On Monday, March 16 the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) will celebrate the 23 graduates who have completed the organization’s Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program with a dinner at the Presidio Springs property, at 721 Laguna St.

The 23 graduates have a combined escrow of $578,608.93 and an average income increase of $43,007. Of this group, seven are no longer receiving housing assistance.

The FSS Program is a voluntary five-year program in which a plan is developed with each participant to design a clear path of specific goals and objectives to achieve living wage employment and gain economic self-sufficiency.

Participants are required to sign a Contract of Participation with HACSB that outlines the services to be provided and the obligations required during participation.

Throughout the five year contract, the FSS case manager monitors a participant’s progress and assists the participant by providing referrals and services so they may complete each level on their journey to self-sufficiency.

“This program gives our participants incentives to create and maintain and tangibly reach their goals,” said Rob Fredericks, HACSB CEO.

“As always, part of the mission of the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara is to provide our residents with opportunities to improve their lives in a variety of ways and put them on a path for better economic independence, including homeownership.” Fredericks said.

The ultimate goal of FSS is to help participants achieve their own personal goals and greater socio-economic advancement, including college degrees, professional careers, and first-time home ownership.

FSS services may include education and vocational training, career planning, resume writing, interview preparation, job search assistance, financial planning, and homeownership preparation.
