The suspected DUI driver in a crash in Goleta last month that killed one of his passengers and critically injured another has died of his injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Daniel Velez-Valerio, 18, of Santa Barbara, passed away on Friday at a Southern California hospital where he was being treated for burns and other serious injuries, CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez told Noozhawk on Monday.
Velez-Valerio was behind the wheel of a Ford pickup truck that slammed into a tree and caught fire at about 11 p.m. on April 20, according to the CHP. The crash occurred on westbound Cathedral Oaks Road, just west of Kellogg Avenue.
A rear-seat passenger — Christopher James Roulo, 22, of Mountain View and Santa Barbara — was fatally injured in the crash.
Velez-Valerio had been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, both felonies, Gutierrez said.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office was awaiting reports on the crash from the CHP before filing charges, but Velez-Valerio’s death brings an end to that case, Gutierrez said.
Velez-Valerio and a second passenger, Patrick J. Marasciullo, 22, of Isla Vista, both suffered major injuries in the crash, including serious burns, according to the CHP.
Marasciullo also reportedly is being treated in a Southern California hospital, but details on his condition were not available.
Velez-Valerio was a 2022 graduate of Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta.
Dos Pueblos Principal Bill Woodard sent out a message to the campus community on Monday, notifying them of Velez-Valerio’s passing, and advising that counselors are available to any students who need them.
“We know Dos Pueblos is a tight-knit community, and we know many of our students and families have been impacted by these losses,” Woodard wrote.
