Early in 2024, country music artist Jelly Roll (born Jason Bradley DeFord) introduced a catchy tune titled, “I Am Not Okay,” on the finale of The Voice.

The lyrics reminded me of a “go to” book out of my past. Back when I was thirty-something, I frequently referred to the concepts presented by Dr. Thomas Harris in his best-selling self-help book, I’m OK — You’re OK.

That book actually helped me to get a handle on life after two failed marriages. Unlike Harris’ book, Jelly Roll’s lyrics have a spiritual message that I believe will touch many souls.

As a young musical artist, Jelly Roll spent some time in the proverbial gutter early in his career thanks to addictions and hanging with the wrong crowd.

Many musicians go into a downward spiral as they seek significance in their chosen career. The fortunate ones find hope and purpose through a spiritual awakening. Their lyrics often present bits and pieces of their journey.

Let me share the lyrics of the “I Am Not Okay” chorus:

“I know I can’t be the only one
Who’s holding on for dear life
But God knows, I know
When it’s all said and done
I’m not okay
But it’s all gonna be alright
It’s not okay
But we’re all gonna be alright.”

He certainly wants to share the hope he found with those in his audience who may be very close to giving up.

Harris’ self-help book certainly assisted me in hanging on, but it was God’s Word that took me out of a dismal lifestyle just a few years later.

For the past 40 years my hope has been found in Christ alone! And, I know for certain Jelly Roll has found the same peace in his new friendship with the Lord.

In fact, his passion these days is conveying the message of hope through his musical talent. You see, for many who decide to follow Jesus later in life, the Holy Spirit stirs us and lights a fire that cannot easily be quenched.

Here are a few questions I believe he wants you to consider in those lyrics:

Are you holding on for dear life? Well, Jesus is the answer.

Jelly Roll certainly knows these words of Jesus found in Matthew 11:28-30:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

You see, we don’t have to go through life on our own.

Let me share the second verse of this redeeming song.

“I woke up today
I almost stayed in bed
Had the devil on my back
And voices in my head
Some days it all gets bad
Some days it all gets worse
Some days I swear I’m better off
Layin’ in the dirt.”

Can you relate to his dilemma?

Let me share another Scripture, 1 Corinthians 10:13, that I’m certain has encouraged the writer of this song.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can stand up under it.”

The challenges you are facing in your life are not unique. Share them with others who have found the answer. Jesus is the Answer!
