Close friendships are few and far between. As a young boy, I tagged along from one military base to the next during my pre-teen years.

The term “separation anxiety” had not been coined back then, but I did certainly experience the trauma of shortened friendships with my young peers.

In real life, separation anxiety goes much deeper than just our relationships. It also deals with loss of jobs and even our physical bodies.

As a personal example, these past few years since being diagnosed with geographic macular degeneration, I’ve experienced the loss of normal vision.

Many tasks take me three or four times as long and some are seemingly impossible.

There’s no cure so far and I’m gradually learning to accept my inability to do simple tasks as I did prior to contracting this fairly prevalent disease associated with natural aging.

Whether it’s the loss of vision, loss of one or more limbs, the inability to walk or run, or the permanent loss of loved ones, gradually coming to grips with such challenges is all part of life.

What many will face is simply another unexpected bump in the road of life.

Yes, it’s not your normal inconsequential bump, but with God’s help I know we can get through such circumstances in His time!

As a devoted follower of Christ, I know He will always be near and the Holy Spirit will provide me with the resources to serve Him until He decides to take me home.

Not long ago, He afforded me a wonderful blessing. I was encouraged to sing a ballad in an evening worship service.

I had not performed “Touch of the Master’s Hand” in perhaps 10 years. Just imagine this old man singing about an old violin as he never had before!

I was accompanied by an accomplished pianist who greatly complemented this six-minute worship experience.

What I want to convey through this personal example is simply this: When we are faced with trials in this life, be certain that the Creator of All is in complete control of your circumstances and He will bring you through the trial and you and perhaps many others will greatly benefit for your small but significant role in His Master Plan.

Let me share the Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:13 that still ring loud and clear:“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”

God Almighty can certainly sequester the symptoms of separation anxiety of all shapes and sizes. His humbling hands will mold us into a more pleasing servant if we allow Him to work His miracles in our lives.

He is our strength and our salvation.
