A juvenile already in custody has been identified as the suspect in a fatal shooting on the Fourth of July in Santa Maria.

At 11:22 p.m., Santa Maria police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of West Lolita Lane for a report of a shooting

Upon arrival they discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment, but was pronounced dead, police said.

The victim has been identified as Brandon Cabrera, 25, of Santa Maria, police said.

On Wednesday, police said detectives confirmed they had identified the suspect, who was already being held at the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall. 

The youth was booked for suspicion of murder and related charges, police said. 

His name was not released due to his age, which police also didn’t release. 

Police also didn’t say why the juvenile was initially in custody.

Detectives were continuing to investigate the killing, including identifying a motive for the homicide.

Relatives described him as “a loving son, devoted father, cherished brother, caring nephew, loyal cousin, and a dear friend to many.”

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on July 16, followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of Magner-Maloney Funeral Home, 600 E. Stowell Road.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. July 17 at St. Louis de Montfort Church. Interment will follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery’s South Lawn.
