Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society will present a Garden Tour: David Heinz Garden of Bromeliads, 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at 918 Mission Ridge Road, Santa Barbara.
Garden tours are only for Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society members; memberships may be purchased at the tour by cash or check.
Heinz was introduced to bromeliads while volunteering at Lotusland 20 years ago. The exotic, brightly colored plants were unknown in his previous Eastern home, but he was hooked.
He cleared his one-acre property of wall-to-wall pampas grass, solved drainage issues, and began collecting and planting terrestrial bromeliads in the dappled shade of old oak trees.
Sandstone pathways, built by Heinz, meander through the shaded garden and lead to a succulent garden in the hot, sunny front yard. He is the master gardener, builder, and sole caretaker/creator of this garden.
Parking is limited, so visitors are asked to carpool; there is no parking on Mission Ridge Road. Signs will point to a few spaces in Heinz’s driveway, or the circular driveway at 939 Mission Ridge Road. Parking may be available at Fire Station #7 or Sheffield Reservoir.
Allow ample time to park and watch for traffic on Mission Ridge Road.
