Local elementary schools participated in the 11th annual All Santa Barbara and Montecito Schools Track & Field Meet at Westmont College on Friday.

Roosevelt, Peabody Charter, Adams, Cleveland, Washington, Harding, Monroe, Franklin, McKinley and Cold Spring Elementary Schools came together for the event.

“I’m deeply grateful to all the schools that participated in the Track and Field Meet,” Cold Spring School District Superintendent Dr. Amy Alzina said.

“The students enjoyed the friendly competition, but I think they enjoyed eating lunch in the Westmont Dining Commons just as much. At the end of the day, everyone left with lots of smiles.”

Students in 4th through 6th grade competed in 11 different events ranging from the shot put to the 800-meter race.

Peabody Charter School came away with the first-place finish, followed by Roosevelt, Washington, Adams, Harding, Cold Spring, Monroe, Franklin, Cleveland and McKinley.

Meanwhile, Cleveland Elementary School earned the inaugural School Spirit Award for the meet, which was voted on by the PE teachers.

The track meet was initiated by Dr. Alzina and Westmont Track & Field coach Russell Smelley to expose students to the sport and a college environment.

“This meet is truly about closing the opportunity gap,” Dr. Alzina said. “The meet is made possible with the partnership from Westmont College, Coach Russell Smelley, Coach Derek Materson, the Cold Spring School parent volunteers who served as timers and field event recorders, and the dedicated Physical Education Teachers from each of the school sites.”
