Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) will participate in the Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill with scheduled earthquake drills at all schools and at the district office.

Each year, millions of people worldwide take part in the Great ShakeOut, practicing how to protect themselves during earthquakes at work, school and home.

The 2025 International ShakeOut Day takes place Oct. 16. LUSD will be conducting its drill at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.

During the drill, all students and staff will practice the lifesaving action “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” which experts agree this is the most effective way to reduce injury and death during earthquakes, LUSD reports.

The ShakeOut is free and open to the public. Anyone can join by registering at www.shakeout.org. Once registered, participants receive resources to plan their drill and improve earthquake preparedness.

The Great California ShakeOut is coordinated by the California Earthquake Authority, Cal OES, the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC), FEMA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and many other partners. Globally, it is coordinated by the Southern California Earthquake Center at USC.

Lompoc Unified School District serves more than 9,000 students in pre-kindergarten through high school who live in the city of Lompoc, Vandenberg Village, Mesa Oaks, Mission Hills, Vandenberg Space Force Base, and adjacent rural areas.
