Studies show that students lose an average 20% of their reading skills over the summer if they do not take the opportunity to read, reports Scholastic magazine. In an effort to stem that sorry statistic, Lompoc Unified School District has partnered with Yogurt Creations to offer a Summer Reading Challenge that offers kids a sweet incentive.

“We can’t think of a better way to get kids reading through their summer than a delicious, frozen treat,” said Katelyn Nelson, a library technician for Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) who is helping to coordinate the program.

Each grade level has its own unique challenge, and when the students meet the challenge they earn a frozen yogurt.

“Reading is imperative to our students being successful in school and in life. We are excited to work with a local business to encourage students to read even more during the summer,” said LUSD Superintendent Trevor McDonald.

Students will be able to access books in the MyOn Digital Library, which students may access by logging into Clever.

“Having digital resources for students to access, regardless of where they may be this summer, helps our students continue their reading while enjoying their summer,” said Deputy Superintendent Bree Valla.

Families are encouraged to contact their child’s school to learn more about each challenge. The program runs June 1 through Aug. 31.
