A 14-year-old mother whose baby was found dead by a Monterey County farm field in early August has been rescued safely by law enforcement officers in Mexico, authorities said Sunday.
Additionally, Sergio Galvez Perez, the father of the girl and the baby, has been arrested, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Monterey County Sheriff’s Office detectives have worked closely with the FBI and Mexican authorities to secure [the girl’s] safe rescue,” Sheriff Tina Nieto said in a written statement posted on social media.
The pair reportedly are connected to the newborn girl found dead Aug. 1 along Struve Road in north Monterey County. Authorities referred to the infant as Baby Angelita, Spanish for Baby Angel.
Monterey County officials said they have confirmed Galvez Perez is the biological father of both the 14-year-old girl and the newborn baby.
An examination of the baby girl’s body indicated she had signs of traumatic injury, Monterey County officials said.
Sergio Galvez Perez has been sought on numerous felony violations including incest, unlawful sexual intercourse and other charges related to inappropriate sexual contact.
Noozhawk is no longer naming the girl since she’s a victim. Initially, authorities in Monterey County identified her as a possible suspect sought in connection with the baby’s murder but later confirmed the 14-year-old’s father sexually abused and impregnated her.
The girl was last seen near Constitution Boulevard and East Laurel Drive in Salinas in Monterey County on Aug. 4, authorities said.
In efforts to locate the pair authorities issued an Amber Alert in early September for the girl and her father plus a white Nissan Altima.
Along with Santa Barbara County, the Amber Alert encompassed Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties.
During the rescue operation, Galvez Perez was arrested after he was found in possession of narcotics.
“[The girl] is safe and is currently in the care of local authorities in Mexico,” the sheriff added.
A press conference will be scheduled at a later date when authorities will provide additional information regarding the investigation, the efforts to rescue the girl, and the arrest of Galvez Perez.
This remains an active investigation, Monterey County officials said, adding no additional information will be released at this time.
