Authorities released the name of the 11-year-old girl who died in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday near Lompoc.
Jaylah Gonzalez of Santa Maria was the passenger killed in the crash, Raquel Zick, spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau, said Wednesday.
The girl reportedly attended Rice Elementary School in Santa Maria where campus officials provided support for students and staff early this week.
At approximately 5 p.m. Sunday, emergency personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol responded to a crash on Highway 1 at Santa Lucia Canyon Road.
Driving a Toyota Camry, Jose Alfred Gonzalez, 65, of Lompoc was stopped on Santa Lucia Canyon Road at the intersection with Highway 1 in preparation to make a left turn.
Shane Giles, 21, of Lompoc was driving south on Highway 1 in a Toyota Prius when Gonzalez entered the intersection to make a left turn. The Prius struck the left side of Camry, the CHP said.
The girl, a passenger in the Camry, died at Lompoc Valley Medical Center due to her injuries.
Giles received major injuries while the Camry’s driver and another passenger both had minor injuries. All three were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.
CHP officers were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
