A shooting at a residential gathering Sunday left one person dead and a second person injured in Santa Maria.
Santa Maria police Sgt. Andres Lopez told Noozhawk that emergency personnel responded to a 4:30 p.m. report of a shooting near the intersection of West Cook and Curryer streets, a few blocks west of North Broadway.
“One subject died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts,” Lt. Daniel Rios of the Detective Bureau said early Monday. “The second injured subject was transported to the hospital with critical injuries but is expected to survive.”
The shooting occurred at a large residential gathering in the 500 block of West Cook Street, Rios added.
Few details were available as detectives and crime scene staff were at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday night, Lopez said.
The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of relatives.

This was the fifth homicide of 2023 in Santa Maria.
The shooting occurred eight days after Jesus Valverde, a 15-year-old Pioneer Valley High School student, was shot and killed in a shooting near Oakley Park in northwest Santa Maria.
On Wednesday morning, a man was critically wounded in a shooting near a business at the corner of North Broadway and Donovan Road, police said.
