A Grover Beach police officer fatally shot a man who allegedly brandished a replica firearm and threatened to shoot the officer on Saturday evening.

According to a Grover Beach Police Department news release, officers were first dispatched to the Kautz Chevron on Grand Avenue and 13th Street around 6:23 p.m. for reports of a man who displayed a firearm to a person.

Officers were unable to locate the subject, however, and cleared the area.

Roughly 15 minutes later, officers were dispatched for reports of a male throwing rocks at passing cars in the same area.

A Grover Beach police officer arrived at the scene and contacted the man, who then “told the officer he had a gun and would shoot the officer,” the release said.

The Police Department said that after giving several commands for the man to comply, to which he allegedly continued to respond that he would shoot the officer, the man then “advanced toward the officer, quickly raising his right arm with a replica firearm in his hand.”

“The officer fired his service weapon and struck the male several times,” the release said.

The incident was all captured on a body-worn camera, according to the release.

The man was provided with medical attention by assisting officers and emergency medical services before being transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the release said.

His identity was not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the 100 block of 13th Street between Grand and Longbranch avenues was expected to remain closed through early Sunday morning.

An investigation was being conducted by the Grover Beach Police Department in cooperation with the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Justice, according to the release.

Saturday night, investigators taped off an area and had placed several cones and markers in the middle of the street, in front of the laundromat at 119 S. 13th St. that shares a parking lot with Nan’s Books & Crystals.

They were also investigating a nearby business complex, located behind the Chevron station at the corner of West Grand Avenue and South 13th Street.
