A Santa Barbara attorney pleaded not guilty Monday morning to charges that he sexually assaulted a woman who was intoxicated and unable to resist.

Andrew Frederick Alire, 40, appeared in Santa Barbara County Superior Court, pleading not guilty to all charges and denying allegations during an arraignment hearing.

Last month, the District Attorney’s Office charged Alire with rape of a drugged victim and oral copulation of an intoxicated person.

Santa Barbara police investigators said the alleged assault occurred on Jan. 15. Detectives arrested Alire on March 17 and booked him into the County Jail. He was released after posting $100,000 bail.

The alleged victim in the case was identified as Jane Doe in court documents.

Megan Chanda is prosecuting the case for the District Attorney’s Office, and defense attorney Monica Cummins is representing Alire.

Alire reportedly is a graduate of the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco and has been a member of the State Bar of California since 2012.

As of Monday, the State Bar website had a “consumer alert” posted on Alire’s page noting that he has been charged with a felony.

“The State Bar posts consumer alerts online when lawyers are charged in a criminal court with a felony or felonies. Anyone who believes they have been the victim of attorney misconduct is urged to file a complaint with the State Bar. DISCLAIMER: The filing of criminal charges does not constitute a finding of guilt or professional misconduct. Criminal defendants are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” the alert stated.
