A 19-year-old man arrested early Wednesday on conspiracy and robbery-related charges in Santa Maria was also identified as a suspect in a January carjacking, just days after a juvenile was arrested in connection with the same crime.
Shortly after 12:30 a.m., Santa Maria Police Department officers responded to a robbery on the 900 block of East Jones Street with three adult victims — two of whom reported being physically assaulted before their personal property was taken.
The suspects included a small group of juveniles or young adults, with one of them brandishing a firearm, Sgt. Daniel Rios said.
The suspects collided with a parked car while fleeing the scene in another vehicle, Rios said.
Just after 1 a.m., Saul Dolores Morelos was located and arrested during a traffic stop on the vehicle — of which Morelos was the only occupant.
He originally was booked on suspicion of conspiracy and robbery, but carjacking charges were added when detectives found him to allegedly be connected to a Jan. 30 carjacking in Santa Maria.
Morelos remained in custody Thursday afternoon without bail at Santa Barbara County Jail.
A 17-year-old male and known gang member was previously arrested in connection with the carjacking — as well as another one on Jan. 25 — when the department’s SWAT team served search and arrest warrants at a residence on the 1200 block of West Bethel Lane.
The 17-year-old, whose name was not released due to being a minor, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of carjacking and vandalism, with a gang enhancement.
Anyone with information related to any of these incidents is asked to contact Detective Cole Whitney at 805.928.3781 ext. 1329 or the SMPD Communications Center at ext. 2277, Rios said.
