A 39-year-old Santa Maria man has been named as the motorcyclist who died last weekend in a three-vehicle crash in Orcutt.
Raymond Abernathy III was killed in the Aug. 16 crash, according to Raquel Zick from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau.
A motorcyclist died after a truck turned in front of him, ejecting the rider who landed on the hood of a third vehicle before ending up in a roadway Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Orcutt Road and Siler Lane.
Abernathy was riding a black Suzuki motorcycle northbound on Orcutt Road at an unknown speed near Siler Lane when the crash occurred, the CHP said.
A white Chevrolet truck traveling southbound on Orcutt Road at approximately 40 mph approached the intersection with Siler Lane where the driver slowed to turn left, the CHP said.
However, the truck turned in front of the Suzuki motorcycle, which crashed into the right rear of the Chevrolet.
Abernathy was ejected and ultimately crashed into the hood of the Mercedes-Benz traveling behind the Chevrolet.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz driver stopped the vehicle, sending the motorcyclist onto the roadway.
The male rider sustained major injuries and was transported via American Medical Response ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, CHP officers said.
Days after the crash, a memorial with flowers, crosses and photos, sits near the scene and on the fence that separates Orcutt Road and Highway 135.
