Authorities have released the name of the 22-year-old man killed in a vehicle crash that left another person badly injured Sunday night in northwest Santa Maria.

Emmanuel Gomez Cortes of Santa Maria died due to his injuries, Sgt. Shane Armstrong of the Santa Maria Police Department, said Wednesday.

At approximately 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Santa Maria firefighters and police officers were dispatched to North Blosser Road at Eagleton Avenue for a single-vehicle rollover crash.

Gomez Cortes, the driver, and his passenger, a 40-year-old Santa Maria man, were ejected from the vehicle that rolled over and landed in the center divider, police said. 

Both patients suffered major injuries and were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center, where Gomez Cortes died. The passenger is expected to recover from his injuries, Armstrong added.

Police suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and were awaiting toxicology reports from the Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Bureau to determine whether drugs also were involved, Armstrong added.

Days after the crash, a memorial created near the intersection includes flowers, balloons, candles, empty beverage cans, pictures and a wooden cross.

A GoFundMe account with the title “Emmanuel Gomez” created to help the family with funeral and burial expenses had raised more than $4,900 toward the $7,000 goal as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Rest In Peace to our Emmanuel. We will forever keep you in our hearts and memories. We love you,” the account said.
