Saxophone legend Tom Scott returns to The Grand on State, along with Grammy-winning pianist, composer and educator Laurence Hobgood for an evening of duo jazz, 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 at 1218 State St., Santa Barbara. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Scott’s sold-out performance in May launched The Grand’s Visiting Artist Concert Series and became one of the highlights of the venue’s opening month.

Tickets are on sale at thegrandonstate.com.

“Scott has been a defining voice on saxophone for decades, as a bandleader, composer, arranger, and one of the most in-demand session players in popular music,” organizers said.

His work spans jazz, pop, rock, film and TV, and his sound is familiar to listeners around the world, according to The Grand on State.

Scott’s musical collaborations include Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney.

Hobgood is a classically trained pianist, a gifted arranger and orchestrator, and a Yamaha Artist, event organizers said.

He is best known for his 20-year collaboration with vocalist Kurt Elling, and he has released highly acclaimed albums of his own.

He has performed and recorded with Charlie Haden, Ernie Watts, Terence Blanchard, Regina Carter, Stefon Harris, and Houston Person, and has appeared from Carnegie Hall and the White House to the Sydney Opera House and London’s Barbican.

He is also an award-winning writer whose work has appeared on NPR’s “Jazz Night in America” and in JazzTimes.

“Tom Scott more than earned his place on our stage the first time around, and our patrons have been asking for him back ever since,” said Brian Mann, co-owner of The Grand on State.

“Pairing him with Laurence Hobgood, one of the most musical and sensitive pianists working today, promises an unforgettable night,” Mann said.
