With the 2021 school year kicking into gear, Noozhawk has put together our annual ParentNooz After School Activities Guide.

After a tummultuous 1½ years of remote learning, we made sure to make things easy when planning your child’s after school activities! Our 2021 After School Activities guide provides you and your child with all the necessary information when deciding on which after-school program is the best fit.

To help parents make informed decisions about the diffrent after-school programs offered in Santa Barbara County, Noozhawk has conducted a series of interviews with representatives of local programs for this year’s After School Activities Guide.

In this interview, Noozhawk talked with Andrew White, director of SB Riptide Lacrosse, to learn more about its after-school program in Santa Barbara.

Q: Describe the activities involved.

A: Players learn and practice lacrosse skills in the hockey rink at Earl Warren Showgrounds, and progress toward scrimmages and games. Our Beginner Clinics are focused on teaching the basics to new players, and our Youth and High School Leagues for experienced players provide high-level training and competition in teams.

Q: What are the hours?

A: Hour-long sessions beginning at 4 p.m. are offered on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Q: What is the age range for children to take part?

A: We have multiple programs for players in K-12th grade.

Q: When was your program started and what was the inspiration for creating it?

A: Riptide Box Lacrosse Programs started in 2017 to provide players the opportunity to learn, compete and have fun playing the exciting, fast-paced version of lacrosse, known as “box” lacrosse.

Q: Describe what makes your program unique and worthwhile.

A: Box Lacrosse is a fun, small-sided version of lacrosse played 5 on 5 in the hockey rink at Earl Warren Showgrounds. The small groups and style of the game allow for increased touches of the ball, rapid development of skills, and more coach-to-player interaction.

Q: Following COVID-19 restrictions, what parts of your program have changed to comply with Santa Barbara County guidelines?

A: We’ve been safely running our programs with safety protocols in place and continually update our practices according to all county, state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Q: What is the average program size or class size for your activity? Teacher to student ratio?

A: We keep the groups small, between 10-15 players, and typically feature a 5-1 coach-player ratio.

Q: In what ways is your program educational?

A: We teach all the fundamentals of lacrosse, including passing, catching, shooting, dodging and more, as well as introduce “box” lacrosse concepts necessary to excel in the small-sided version of the game.

Q: What is the cost/tuition? Are scholarships available?

A: Costs vary for each program and pricing information can be found on our website. Financial assistance is available based on need, and WE PROVIDE FREE EQUIPMENT RENTAL!
