The Lompoc Public Library is joining libraries across the nation in encouraging community members to sign up for library cards.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide come together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Anyone with a free-of-charge library card can enjoy the benefits of fun and educational programming, technology and media resources, and use of the library’s collection of books, DVDs, mobile hotspots, Oculus, and State Park passes.

Library cards can be obtained at either the Lompoc Public Library or the Village Library branch. Those seeking library cards will need to provide a photo ID and proof of address. People under age 18 will need a parent or guardian present to apply.

Another option is a digital library card, which can be used to listen to audiobooks and music through the Libby or Hoopla App, and can be applied for at https://lom.blackgold.org/MyAccount/eCARD. A physical library card is necessary to check out books and other physical materials from the libraries.

During September 2021, 166 community members signed up for a library card. The Lompoc Public Library is hoping to break last year’s record this year.
