Bishop Diego got defensive in the second half on Friday night, holding Valley Christian Academy of Santa Maria to 10 points to record a 46-27 girls basketball win.
Elliot Redkey scored 12, Julia de la Cruz had 10 and Citlali Morales had nine for Bishop (10-2), which scored 26 in the last two quarters.
“We had many opportunities to score in the first half but just missed some shots we normally make,” said Cardinals coach Jeff Burich. “We still led 20-17 at halftime. We did a better job defensively in the second half, holding them to 10 points and getting some steals and converting them into points.
“I was happy with our effort but the execution just wasn’t there at times. We need to tighten things up and improve on our free-throw shooting.”
The Cardinals will play their fourth game this week when they meet Pakarunga of New Zealand on Saturday at Dos Pueblos High at 4 p.m. The Charger boys will take on Pakarunga at 5:30 p.m.
