Noozhawk’s ParentNooz Camp Guide is officially here and we made sure to make things easy when planning your child’s summer!

To give parents the tools to help make informed decisions about Summer Camps for their kids in Santa Barbara, Noozhawk has conducted a series of interviews with representatives of local programs for this year’s Summer Camp Guide.

In this interview, Noozhawk spoke with John Seavey, Director of Basketball Operations for UC Santa Barbara Basketball to learn more about their Youth Basketball Camps.

Question: What is the name of your camp or program?

Answer: UCSB Youth Basketball Camp

Q: What is the focus of your camp or program?

A: To provide basic and fundamental skill instruction for youth players interested in basketball.

Q: How many years has the camp been running? Do you have any professional accreditations or certifications?

A: UCSB basketball camp is in its 5th year with the current coaching staff. We have NBA players drop into camp to guest speak each year!

Q: What protocols does your camp have in place due to COVID-19?

A: No masks required at camp.

Q: What goals do you have for kids participating in your camp or program?

A: Our goal at UCSB basketball camp is to improve campers skills, have fun and interact with the community.

Q: Describe a typical day for a child attending your camp or program.

A: A typical day at UCSB camp is check in at 8:45 AM, warm ups with our team strength coach, skill instructions, lunch and games!

Q: What is the staff to child ratio? Do you require training or background checks for your employees?

A: We staff UCSB basketball camp with our own players and coaches. Depending on our numbers we usually have a 8 campers to 1 staff member ratio.

Q: What is the best part, in your opinion, about your camp or program?

A: Our camp is fun! We encourage campers to take their favorite part of camp and bring it home to work on their game outside of UCSB camp.

Q: In what ways is your camp or program educational?

A: Our camp promotes higher education by giving the campers a behind the scenes look into our own players schedules and lives. They are reminded the importance of education, getting good grades and ultimately setting themselves up to go to college.
