Noozhawk’s ParentNooz Camp Guide is officially here and we made sure to make things easy when planning your child’s summer!

To give parents the tools to help make informed decisions about Summer Camps for their kids in Santa Barbara, Noozhawk has conducted a series of interviews with representatives of local programs for this year’s Summer Camp Guide.

In this interview, Noozhawk spoke with Spencer Erdman, Assistant Coach for UC Santa Barbara Baseball, to learn more about the summer programs they are offering this year.

Question: What is the name of your camp or program?

Answer: UCSB Youth Baseball Camp

Q: What is the focus of your camp or program?

A: The focus of our camp is to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for aspiring baseball players to learn from professional coaches.

Q: How many years has the camp been running?

A: The camp is a mainstay in the community; the UCSB Baseball Program hosts Summer Youth Camps each year with a staff of professional coaches and current collegiate players.

Q: What protocols does your camp have in place due to COVID-19?

A: Participants 12 and older are encouraged to be fully vaccinated before participating in a UC Santa Barbara sports camp. Please note even one dose of the vaccine will provide protection from COVID-19, and anyone eligible is strongly encouraged to get vaccinated. Families will be asked to fill out a daily COVID-19 Survey to ensure campers are not demonstrating any symptoms.

Q: What goals do you have for kids participating in your camp or program?

A: Our goal is simple: Provide a safe and fun environment for players to foster their passion for the game of baseball, regardless of current skillset.

Q: Describe a typical day for a child attending your camp or program.

A: A typical day for a child attending camp will begin with a discussion amongst campers and coaches to get to know each other and set the rules for the day. The mornings will be dedicated to small group rotations in which each station provides a game designed to teach the players a specific baseball skill. The games are easily progressed and regressed based on the skill level of the campers.

Q: What is the staff to child ratio? Do you require training or background checks for your employees?

A: 7:1 ratio. Background checks are required and our staff is comprised of professional coaches and current collegiate athletes.

Q: What is the best part, in your opinion, about your camp or program?

A: The Student-Athletes are the stars of the show. Campers will spend ample time learning from current UCSB Baseball players who have a deep passion for the game of baseball. We expect our staff to set a great example to the campers of what it means to be a Gaucho. Often times, families will attend games in the Spring specifically to see players they met during the Summer Camps.

Q:  In what ways is your camp or program educational?

A: We provide professional baseball instruction to the campers in an environment that fosters teamwork and a positive attitude.

Q: What is the age and price range of your camp? Do you offer any scholarships?

A: Ages 6-13. $349. Discounts available for multi-week and family purchases.
