The students of Vista Del Mar Union School District (VDMUSD) are celebrating a new, state-of-the-art playground structure and freshly laid blacktop area.
The major upgrades mark the first phase of an ongoing effort to create safer, more robust outdoor learning environments that directly support the district’s mission as an institute of environmental studies, VDMUSD said.
“The new play structure offers diverse and engaging activities, promoting physical fitness and social development,” the district said. “The smooth, new blacktop area is designed to facilitate a wider range of outdoor classroom activities, from science experiments to organized games, seamlessly extending the school’s learning capacity beyond the traditional walls.”
“We believe that a child’s learning environment should be as dynamic and stimulating as the lessons we teach,” said Bree Valla, superintendent. “These playground and blacktop upgrades immediately enhance the daily experience for our students, providing a safer and more inspirational space for play and instruction.”
While the playground is complete, VDMUSD said it is focusing on a more challenging and urgent need — the school field.
Given the district’s rural location, nestled directly adjacent to State Park lands, the field has become severely compromised by the natural environment. It is currently riddled with gopher and squirrel holes, making it hazardous for students to use for physical education, recess, and environmental studies, VDMUSD said.
To address this, VDMUSD is launching a fundraising campaign to repair, re-sod, and install necessary subsurface deterrents to protect the field.
“For Vista Del Mar, this is more than just a sports field, it is an essential outdoor classroom,” the district said. “As an institute of environmental studies, the district is deeply committed to hands-on, nature-based learning.”
A safe, usable field is critical to providing students with the essential, experiential education that defines the program, according to school officials.
“Our mission is to connect our students with the natural world around them, but we cannot do that safely when our primary outdoor learning area is a tripping hazard,” said Ryan Harrington, Vista Del Mar Union School Board president.
“Securing this field is paramount to fulfilling our commitment to environmental education and ensuring every child has a safe place to run, play, and learn about the delicate ecosystem in which we live,” Harrington said.
The district is asking parents, alumni, local businesses, and community members to contribute to the campaign. Funds raised will go directly toward professional remediation, safety improvements, and long-term maintenance measures, VDMUSD said.
