One of two free Vermicomposting Workshops for beginners will be offered 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 1:30-p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Mussell Senior Center, 510 E. Park Ave., Santa Maria.

Attendees will learn about composting with worms and how it helps divert food waste away from the landfill while enriching the soil with healthy nutrients, the city said.

During the two-hour workshop, participants will build worm bins and learn the step-by-step process of building and maintaining vermicompost.

Worm bins, worms, compost, and a worm guide are included with the workshop registration. No previous experience is necessary.

Registration is open until Thursday, April 24 at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register (Activity #24549 for the morning workshop or #24550 for the afternoon workshop). Open to Santa Maria residents ages five years and older. Families are welcome.
