Providence School presents an evening with Olympic medalist Jim Ryun, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 36 E. Victoria St., Santa Barbara.

Ryun, the first high school boy to run the mile in under four minutes, is rated by ESPN as the No. 1 high school athlete of all time, beating Tiger Woods and LeBron James.

Ryun’s life journey — from being cut from the church baseball team to earning medals in three different Olympics, setting world records in several events, and serving as a U.S. congressman — demonstrates how he made crucial course adjustments in the face of disappointments and successes.

His talk is the first of this season’s Providence Presents community-wide programs, featuring speakers with information helpful to parents and others who care about youth and education.

In his presentation, Ryun is expected to challenge young athletes and their parents to think about their own goals, dreams and motivations, and to make needed course corrections to reach their true gift.

The Courage to Run, Ryun’s latest book, will be available for sale and signing at the event.
