Millions of women live with or are at risk for heart disease. Once a woman receives a heart disease diagnosis, the medical journey can be confusing and isolating; and studies have shown a link between heart disease and mental health conditions such as depression.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., but studies also report that women who have close family relationships and good friendships often make better recoveries from heart events.

To support women living with heart disease, WomenHeart groups exist nationwide, including in Santa Barbara County, supported by Sansum Clinic’s Health Education Department.

The local support groups are led by WomenHeart Champions, who are trained patient volunteers. Group meetings, which are free to attend, allow women to connect with others who are at risk of, or are living with heart disease. Participants share encouragement and learn the latest heart health information.

During February, which is American Heart Month, increased focus is placed on the heart health of the U.S., where nearly 48 million women are living with or are at risk for heart disease.
