A screening of the thought-provoking 2023 documentary “Deep Rising” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the Alcazar Theatre in Carpinteria.

Narrated by actor and ocean advocate Jason Momoa, the film is presented in collaboration with Peggy Oki’s Origami Whales Project, and aims to raise awareness about the critical threats facing Earth’s oceans, including bottom trawling and seabed mining.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and guests will be welcomed by a striking installation — Oki’s iconic curtain of Origami Whales, which creates a visual reminder of what’s at stake in the fight to protect marine life.

Following the film, attendees can participate in a discussion and Q&A focusing on ocean conservation efforts and actions individuals and communities can take.

The event comes at a pivotal moment, as the International Seabed Authority convened last month to debate a global moratorium versus exploitation of seabeds.

Suggested donation is $5. Attendees will be entered into a drawing for gift certificates and in-kind donations generously provided by local businesses.

Founded by Peggy Oki in 2004, the Origami Whales Project engages all ages to create environmental art to raise awareness against threats to cetaceans (whales and dolphins).

Curtain of 40,000 Origami Whales represents whales killed since the 1986 International Whaling Commission whaling moratorium.
