Last year, Carpinteria’s Matt Moore thought he closed up shop for good after 45 years in business.  

On Tuesday, his surf shop and a backroom surfboard shaping room, Rincon Designs, reopened in the same building it has called home since 1998.

Rincon Designs has officially returned to Carpinteria at 659 Linden Ave., offering customers the same surfboards and apparel, but with a renovated open space.

Moore’s son, Ryan, has taken over management of the shop. Ryan Moore and his wife, Ashley, own and operate three other Carpinteria businesses: Heritage Goods & Supply, Lucky Llama Coffee House and Sunburst Wine Bar. 

“It feels really good and exciting, and I’m really proud of the kids,” Matt Moore said. “They’ve done a great job inside.”

Customers still will see him at the shop. He’ll be shaping surfboards, which he said is his main love.

“I’ve been doing it for 50 years or more, so for me it’s kind of my art and what I do,” Moore said. “Now I can concentrate on that instead of having to be the boss of the store.”

Rincon Designs shut down in March 2025 after the building went up for sale. However, late last year, Ryan Moore’s father-in-law, Scott Smigel, bought the property, allowing the Carpinteria staple to return.

To prepare for the reopening, Moore said they removed the old ceiling, opting for exposed trusses with a tin roof, put the clothing on mobile racks and added wood elements.

“It was so easy to have a big group of people in there, whereas before it was a little cramped and everything was set in place,” Moore said. 

Rincon Designs Surf Shop is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Sweet Treats for Solvang

Just in time for peak summer heat, a new ice cream shop is opening in Solvang.

Santa Ynez Creamery is set to open at 11 a.m. July 1. It is located at 1693 Mission Drive, at the corner of Mission Drive and Alisal Road.

Hollister Village Plaza Confirms New Restaurants

It’s official: Raising Cane’s, Urbane Cafe and El Pollo Loco are all coming to Goleta. 

Hollister Village Plaza confirmed on Instagram that three restaurants will be taking over the shopping center at 7000 Hollister Ave.

No opening dates have been announced. 

Raising Cane’s has been rumored to open in the shopping center since Kyle’s Kitchen announced its move to the Target shopping center at 6831 Hollister Ave. earlier this year. 

Noozhawk previously reported that Urbane Cafe also was planning to open a location in that shopping center.

New Fro-Yo Shop to Come to Santa Barbara

Salty’s Frozen Yogurt announced on Instagram that a new frozen yogurt shop is coming to Santa Barbara later this summer. 

No specific location or opening date has been announced.

Cuso’s Creamery to Start Offering Sandwiches

Cuso’s Creamery and Bike Shop in Santa Barbara is expanding its specialty. It soon will offer fresh sandwiches at 620 State St.

“We’re bringing together ice cream, fresh sandwiches, and bikes, all under one roof,” the shop announced on Instagram this week. “A brand-new Cusos experience is on the way, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

Santa Barbara’s Latest TOT Revenue

Santa Barbara’s transient occupancy tax revenue is 7% above the city’s budgeted amount.

So far this fiscal year, the city has collected $34.2 million in transient occupancy tax revenue. Of that revenue, $30.1 million came from hotels and $4.1 million came from short-term rentals. 

In May alone, the 11th month of the city’s fiscal year, Santa Barbara collected $3.4 million in TOT revenue, according to Lyndsay Maas, the city’s assistant finance director.
