The Grand on State will present saxophonist Ernie Watts, who will lead a quintet of local musicians, 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1218 State St.
Watts is a two-time Grammy winner who spent 20 years as a mainstay of “The Tonight Show” band on NBC, along with years anchoring the Quartet West led by legendary bassist Charlie Haden.
Watts will be joined by Jeff Elliott on trumpet and flugelhorn; Tom Gastineau, piano; Randy Tico, bass; and Dick Weller, drums.
Tico and Weller are part of The Grand Band, the house band for the jazz club, which opened in April.
Watts’ career ranges from touring with the Rolling Stones, to recording with Marvin Gaye and Barry White, to performing with jazz singer Kurt Eling.
Watts has also recorded dozens of albums as a group leader.
A Delaware native but based in Los Angeles for decades, Watts has toured Europe and the U.S., and runs the Flying Dolphin record label that has released his work and that of other jazz greats.
After Watts finishes his sets, a jam session will follow until 11 p.m.
