For more than two decades, Galanga Thai has been a cornerstone of Thai cuisine in Santa Barbara, offering a warm and authentic dining experience.
Rooted in a family’s deep love for their heritage, the restaurant brings the rich, diverse flavors of Thailand to the downtown area.
The story of Galanga Thai is not just about food — it’s about family, tradition and a passion for sharing Thai culture with the community.
Family Legacy
The journey of Galanga Thai begins with founders Chareonsak Lertchareonyong and his wife, Pornphan Sae-ung, lovingly known as Mr. C and Mama.
Immigrating from Thailand 40 years ago, they sought to create a welcoming space where they could raise their family while introducing authentic Thai cuisine to Santa Barbara.
Their first venture, Your Place at 22 N. Milpas St., became a beloved local eatery.
Encouraged by its success, they opened Galanga Thai at 507 State St., near the Haley Street intersection, bringing their culinary expertise to the heart of downtown.
The restaurant is named after “kla” or galanga, a root that is a staple in southeast Asian cooking and traditional medicine.
Young galanga is edible, while older galanga is often used in soups, stocks and spice blends to enhance flavors.
This ingredient, symbolic of both nourishment and healing, reflects the restaurant’s commitment to authenticity and depth of flavor.
Bangkok Traditions
The menu at Galanga Thai is a reflection of the owner’s upbringing in Bangkok.
Unlike regional Thai cuisines that may emphasize specific ingredients or cooking styles, Galanga Thai’s dishes represent the everyday flavors of Bangkok’s street food stalls and home-cooked meals.
One of the restaurant’s defining characteristics is its balance of flavors. Thai cuisine is known for its intricate dance of sour, sweet, salty, spicy and bitter elements, all of which can be found in Galanga Thai’s dishes.
- Soups: Many Thai soups are both sour and spicy, a reflection of Thailand’s humid climate, where spicy food helps the body cool down.
- Curries: From the rich and mildly spiced Yellow Curry to the deeply flavorful Mussamun Curry, each dish is a nod to Thailand’s multicultural influences. The Penang Curry, one of the Mr. C’s personal favorites, is a fragrant blend of lemongrass, shallots, garlic, red chilies, cumin, kaffir lime and coconut milk.
- Stir-Fried Noodles:
- Pad Thai offers a sweet and sour contrast, featuring garlic, sweet radish, fish sauce, dried shrimp and ground peanuts.
- Pad See Yew is a savory combination of garlic, fermented soybean and sweet soy sauce, creating a rich umami flavor.
These dishes, passed down through generations, have been slightly adapted to accommodate dietary preferences while staying true to their traditional roots.
Authentic Ingredients
Galanga Thai remains dedicated to using imported sauces and seasonings from Thailand to maintain authenticity.
Fresh meats and vegetables are sourced from Los Angeles-based suppliers to ensure quality.
While some minor adaptations are necessary — such as gluten-free modifications — great care is taken to preserve the integrity of each dish’s intended flavor profile.
The restaurant prides itself on ensuring that customers who visit Thailand can recognize and enjoy the same dishes they first experienced at Galanga Thai.
One of the most essential tools in Thai cooking is the wok. The heat and fire used in stir-frying are crucial to achieving the signature textures and flavors found in Thai cuisine.
While certain kitchen tools may be substituted, the commitment to traditional ingredients remains unwavering.
Cozy Atmosphere
Galanga Thai offers a casual and cozy atmosphere, designed for families and friends to gather over a comforting meal. Thai music plays in the background, setting the mood for an immersive experience.
To introduce Thai food to those who have never tried it before, the restaurant actively participates in community events, offering tasting opportunities to new customers.
Rooted in Passion
Having worked at Galanga Thai for more than 20 years, the owner’s perspective has evolved from seeing it as just a job to a true passion for cooking and sharing Thai cuisine.
The greatest joy comes from watching customers return repeatedly for their favorite dishes, turning a first-time tasting into a lifelong craving.
Each dish on the menu carries a history — created, perfected and passed down through generations. The goal is simple: to make customers happy, full and eager to share their experience with others.
