Next up in Hospice of Santa Barbara’s (HSB) free illuminate Speaker Series will be Richard Louv, who will discuss Vitamin N and the New Nature Movement, 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. The virtual event is free to attend, but registration is required.

HSB’s illuminate Speaker Series, started in 2020, addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and offers active solutions to navigate through this new reality.
Louv’s books, including” Last Child in the Woods,” “The Nature Principle,” “Our Wild Calling,” and “Vitamin N,” have helped create an international movement to connect children to the natural world; this new nature movement has grown to include adults.
“Outside” magazine reports Louv’s work is “widely credited with helping spark an international movement to examine the therapeutic benefits of time spent outside. That movement is nearly ubiquitous today. New scientific papers revealing the power of wild places to counteract anxiety, stress, depression, ADHD, and even PTSD seem to make headlines every week.”
Louv’s ongoing efforts have encouraged new, biophilic designs for schools, homes, workplaces, and facilities for aging. More than 1,000 studies now show how human connection to nature enhances physical, mental and spiritual health, from childhood until the end of life.
“This is the first time we have an environment focused speaker as part of our illuminate series,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “This will be a new type of conversation and we are very excited to hear Richard Louv share his knowledge with our community.”
To address the shared feelings people have been experiencing during the pandemic — such as fear, sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty, vulnerability, despair, and anger — HSB will present a new nationally known speaker every other month.
