The Chicago Cubs selected UCSB outfielder Ivan Brethowr with the 212th overall pick in the 7th Round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Monday.

With his selection, Brethowr joined Ryan Gallagher as the second Gaucho to be taken by the Cubs and the fourth overall in the draft.

Meanwhile, Matt Ager (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Aaron Parker (Toronto Blue Jays) were drafted in the 6th Round.

Brethowr provided a key power bat to the Big West champion Gauchos in 2024, starting in 50 of the team’s 58 games.

The 6-foot-6 Brethowr blasted 15 homers to lead all Big West bats while also registering a .402 on-base percentage.

He was named to the All-Big West First Team after also tallying 10 doubles and driving in 39 runs.

Brethowr was also an All-Big West First Team selection in 2023 after he hit .311 with 11 homers and put together 17 multi-hit games.

Before he was a Gaucho, Brethowr appeared in 16 games and hit .290 for the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2022.

Brethowr will now look to rise up the ranks of the Cubs’ organization alongside Gallagher.
