The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District hosted its first Spring Formal Dance event dedicated to celebrating students with extensive needs and supports.

During the school day, on May 2, students from across the district gathered at Pioneer Valley High School for an experience centered on inclusion, friendship and joy, the district said.

While all students are welcome at school events, this Spring Formal Dance is designed to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where students with disabilities can fully participate and shine.

More than 100 students from Pioneer Valley and Santa Maria High Schools, as well as the district’s transition programs, attended, accompanied by their teachers and staff.

“For many, this is more than just a dance; it’s an opportunity to experience the joy of music, celebration and friendship while dressed in their finest,” said Jody Dowell, Pioneer Valley special education teacher.

“PV was thrilled to provide a space where students can reconnect, create lasting memories, and embrace the magic of the high school experience,” Dowell said.

A highlight of the dance is the partnership between the district’s Special Education Department and the Assistance League of Santa Barbara.

For the first time, the Assistance League provided nearly 90 formal gowns, shoes, accessories, dress pants, and suit jackets to help ensure students look and feel their best.

”Everyone here was so excited to contribute to something truly special,” said Kat Foote, Assistance League prom chair.

The dance featured a decorated venue, catered meal, professional photos, lively music, and a DJ.

The Spring Formal Dance continues the district’s tradition of hosting meaningful events for students with disabilities. It marks the third district-wide celebration, following successful events such as the Halloween Dance and Track and Field Day.

The gatherings have fostered joy, connection and community, and the dance promises to carry that legacy forward.
