Lompoc Parks and Recreation has announced that 131 scholarships were recently issued to assist low-income recreation program participants.

The $17,000 in funding for the scholarships was possible by a city of Lompoc Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) as part of a human services program directed at youth and seniors.

A number of the grants enabled young athletes to participate in Lompoc Parks and Recreation youth basketball.

Lompoc Parks And Recreation Manager Mario Guerrero, Jr. said the scholarships are an important tool to make recreation programming accessible to as many as possible in the community.

“Staying active is critical to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children and adults alike,” he said. “These recreation scholarships ensure Lompoc recreation programs can be accessed by those who need them most.”
