An evening of Ekphrastic Poetry, led by Santa Barbara Poet Laureate George Yatchisin, will be presented at 7 p.m. May 14, at the Rubenstein Chan Contemporary Art Gallery, 410 Palm Ave., Unit B3, Carpinteria.

“We will hear poems about artwork in the gallery that are part of the Textual Integration show currently at Rubenstein Chan,” organizers said. “Poets have chosen specific works to write about and will read them publicly for the first time at this event.”

Participating poets will include Lisa Bass, Michelle Detorie, Julie Dillemuth, Simon Kiefer, Emily Lord-Kambitsch, Michaela McGinnis, Melinda Palacio, Chryss Yost, and Yatchisin.

The evening will also feature a group exercise, Writing About Seeing, introducing the methods of ekphrastic poetry and help attendees understand how to deploy analogy, metaphor, music, and more to express their reactions to visual arts.
