Novim, a nonprofit scientific research group based at UC Santa Barbara, recently presented entrepreneur and philanthropist Sara Miller McCune with a 2019 Science Courage Award in the area of “Publishing Credibility.”
McCune is the founder and executive chairwoman of SAGE Publishing, a Newbury Park-based international publisher that each year produces more than 1,000 journals and more than 900 new books, reference works and electronic products covering business, humanities, medicine, science, social sciences and technology.
The Science Courage Award is one of Novim’s Alexandra Jane Noble Awards, which honor efforts to communicate complex scientific topics in innovative, engaging ways to stimulate greater awareness of the issues in society — particularly among children and young adults.
Alexandra Jane “Janie” Noble, a Stanford University graduate and prolific writer, journalist, attorney and futurist, envisioned epiphany awards that embraced her vision of scientific discovery and contribution. The longtime Montecito resident died in 2015 at age 76.
Novim was founded in 2008 at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UCSB. The organization assembles teams of scientists to objectively study global issues; identify options for addressing the concerns, based upon a collaborative problem-solving approach used in the field of physics; and render them comprehensible to nonscientists.
