In this interview Noozhawk spoke with Scott Coe, Executive Director at Solvang Theaterfest to learn more about the nonprofit’s goal to connect and enrich the community through their live performing arts venue.

Solvang Theaterfest

Question: What is the name and mission of your nonprofit?

Answer: Solvang Theaterfest, which owns and operates the Solvang Festival Theater. The mission of Solvang Theaterfest® is to provide a unique, live performing arts venue that promotes the highest quality experience for artists and audience members in a space that is safe and accessible to all. Our goal is to connect and enrich the community while encouraging the understanding, learning and appreciation of diverse ideas and cultures.

Q: How long has your nonprofit been in service, and who are its founders?

A: We were established in 1974. Our founders were local business owners and representatives of PCPA who collaborated to build a theater so tourists would have a reason to come to Solvang.

Q: How is your nonprofit primarily funded and what are your greatest needs?

A: We are funded by the revenue generated by our events, along with grants, and donations from community supporters. Our greatest need is in providing financial support for our day to day operations, including major maintenance projects as needed.

Q: In what ways does your nonprofit utilize its funding?

A: We are able to expand the number and quality of performances onstage, as well as maintain a safe and structurally sound facility.

Q: What types of fundraisers and/or programs does your nonprofit run?

A: We have annual giving campaigns, as well as specific, non-recurring campaigns. This year, we are conducting a seat sponsorship program wherein supporters can purchase a personalized bronze plaque to be mounted on the seat of their choice. Seat sponsorships are available starting at $500 per seat.

Q: Describe your organizations staffing models and internal operations. Has anything changed since the start of your nonprofit?

A: We currently have three full time employees, three part time employees, and a small legion of volunteer supporters called “Red Coats,” which provide ushering support and other event support.

Q: How do people get involved/volunteer for your nonprofit?

A: Visit our website to find out more about our Red Coat Program or call us directly and we can provide details.

Q: What makes your nonprofit different from others?

A: We are an iconic theater that has been a key driver of the local economy for fifty years. As a newly renovated, 700 seat outdoor amphitheater, we provide a visual and audio experience that rivals any outdoor theater in the country.

Q: What is one best kept secret or fun fact about your nonprofit that not everyone knows?

A: The original theater was built in less than 60 days. Also, a family of bats lives somewhere in the stage house rafters, and regularly makes an appearance during our evening shows.
