Urging all Santa Marians to do their part to conserve and preserve water, Mayor Alice Patino proclaimed May as Water Awareness Month at a recent City Council meeting.

Aligning with Water Awareness Month, third-grade students across the community participated in the Utilities Department’s 13th Annual Water Awareness Poster Contest and five winners were recognized during the council meeting.

The winning poster creators are:
Javet Lopez – Alvin School for Most Water Aware
Luz Vitervo – Sanchez School for Best Celebration of Water
Enrique Andrade – Rice School for Most Colorful
Daleyza Coxcahua Mata – Sanchez School for Most Artistic
Janice Ochoa Jaramillo – Alvin School for Most Educational

Student winners attended with their families and teachers, and received trophies, prizes, and certificates from the Utilities Department, along with donations from local sponsors.

The Utilities Department thanks the Santa Maria-Bonita School District for supporting the contest, and the teachers, school administrators, and families who supported students’ participation.
