For primary students at South Coast Montessori (SCM), what began as a simple idea to create class treats transformed into a charitable endeavor, showcasing the young children’s compassion and community spirit.

Even a rainy day can’t deter young South Coast Montessori School students from visiting the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County.

In December, the SCM primary students worked together to create ready-to-mix jars of hot chocolate and winter oat bars, which they sold before and after school.

The result was not just tasty treats but an achievement in fundraising, as they successfully raised more than $700 to give back to the community through a donation to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.

On Feb. 6, the youngsters visited the food bank to gain first-hand insights into how their charitable efforts would impact the community. The field trip allowed the students to witness the vital role played by the food bank and deepened their understanding of how their contributions could make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

“This initiative reflects the essence of the Montessori Method, where students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and engage with the community around them,” said Leah Sahagun, lead primary program teacher.

“The primary students at SCM not only raised funds but actively participated in learning about the broader implications of their charitable efforts,” she said. “The experience has left an indelible mark on these young minds, fostering a sense of empathy and a commitment to continue helping their community in the years to come.”
