The Marjorie Luke Theatre will present the award-winning documentary “Out of Plain Sight,” 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 as part of its ongoing Green Film Series.
From Pulitzer Prize finalist Rosanna Xia, “Out of Plain Sight” investigates a little-known environmental disaster hidden beneath the waters off Southern California.
The story begins with David Valentine, a UC Santa Barbara scientist who discovered a corroded barrel on the seafloor not far from Catalina Island. His discovery opened the door to a much larger environmental mystery and a troubling chapter in California’s history.
In the years following World War II, as many as half a million barrels of toxic waste were quietly dumped into the ocean off the Southern California coast. Decades later, questions remain about the lasting impact of this pollution on the ocean, marine life and coastal communities.
Through investigative reporting and scientific exploration, “Out of Plain Sight” brings this hidden history to the surface and examines the environmental consequences that continue to unfold today, organizers said.
The documentary, directed by Xia, a Los Angeles Times environmental reporter, and Los Angeles-based filmmaker Daniel Straub, has received more than a dozen prominent film festival honors, including the Audience Choice Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the Jackson Wild Media Award for best investigative film.
During a post-film Q&A discussion, the audience will hear from Xia and a panel of scientists including:
David Valentine, UC Santa Barbara; Lihini Aluwihare, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego; Alissa Deming, Pacific Marine Mammal Center; Eunha Hoh, San Diego State University, School of Public Health; and Mark Gold, California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), Scripps Institution of Oceanography
