A man suffered major burn injuries Friday night in a fire of unknown cause in Goleta, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

At about 6:45 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 5500 block of Hollister Avenue on what originally was reported as a vegetation fire, said fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

Upon arrival, they determined there was no vegetation fire, but found a victim with severe injuries in the San Jose Creek creekbed, Bertucelli said.

Firefighters set up a rope system to bring the victim up out of the creek, and he was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The victim’s name and details on his condition were not available.

The incident remained under investigation.
