The Santa Barbara Blues Society (SBBS) presents Rob Rio headlining its annual Member Appreciation Show , 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara St. Main doors open at 6:45 p.m.

Known by some as the Boss of the Boogie, piano man and vocalist Rio plays the boogie-woogie and jump blues of the 1940s and ’50s with a style that’s excited audiences around the world for more than 35 years.

In 2008, Rio was inducted into the Boogie Woogie Hall of Fame.

Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Rio now lives in Los Angeles, and has been performing at festivals, events and clubs at home and on the road nationally and internationally.

His main influences include Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, Jimmy Yancy, Roosevelt Sykes, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner and Ray Charles.

Rio has appeared with many of the original blues greats, such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, James Cotton, Charles Brown, Joe Cocker, and Paul Butterfield.

He has recorded with Mick Jagger, Canned Heat, Billy Boy Arnold, William Clarke, Coco Montoya, Finis Tasby, Walter Trout, and Mud Morganfield.

Tickets can be purchased at the door only. General admission tickets are $10; SBBS members are free. Santa Barbara Jazz Society members and one companion get a $5 discount each. Street parking only.
