Santa Maria High School Band director Samantha Bunten has been selected to participate in the 2026 Rose Parade as part of Saluting America’s Band Directors.

The ensemble will feature more than 350 musicians from across the country and Mexico, coming together to celebrate excellence in music education and to recognize the dedication of band directors nationwide.

Bunten will perform on the sousaphone in the parade and the tuba with the concert band.

The 2026 Rose Parade appearance represents the third major parade performance for Saluting America’s Band Directors, following participation in the 2022 Rose Parade and 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

“This is an incredible opportunity and a true honor,” said Bunten. “Being part of something on this scale allows me to show my students that music doesn’t end after high school; it can stay with you throughout your life, open doors to unforgettable experiences, and connect you with people from across the country.

“Beyond the performance itself, the travel, collaboration, and shared pride in representing our schools and communities make this trip especially meaningful,” she said. “Many of us have performed together before, so it will feel like reuniting with family while also welcoming new members.”

Participation in the Rose Parade places the director and ensemble on a national stage watched by millions, reinforcing the value of music education and lifelong involvement in the arts.

The selection also highlights Santa Maria High School’s continued commitment to providing students with inspiring musical opportunities, school officials said.
