A remarkable reunion unfolded recently at Libbon Elementary School in Santa Maria, bringing a story of hope and healing full circle for a Santa Maria-Bonita School District family.
A chance meeting between a parent and a school nurse revealed a powerful connection that began years ago in a hospital.
In 2019, a young boy named Romeo was born at Marian Regional Medical Center (MRMC) facing immediate medical challenges.
He was airlifted to Children’s Valley Hospital in Madera for specialized care. During this difficult time, the family was supported by a compassionate team, including a registered nurse named Liza Marie Mabansag, who at the time worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at MRMC.
Her gentle care and heartfelt prayers left a lasting impression on Romeo’s family, who held onto hope for their son’s recovery.

Fast forward to today, Romeo is a beloved student at Libbon Elementary School. Known for his radiant smile and joyful spirit, he has become a source of inspiration for his classmates and teachers.
Despite facing ongoing health challenges, Romeo’s positive attitude remains unshaken.
In a beautiful twist of fate, the school nurse now supporting Romeo and his family is none other than nurse Liza Marie Mabansag.
Now serving as a school nurse at Libbon, the moment she met Romeo’s mother, Teanna Venegas, there was an instant recognition.
“I’ve never forgotten her,” said Teanna, who now works as a behavioral support assistant for the district. She referred to Liza as “our angel nurse.”
The bond formed years ago in a hospital room was rekindled with warmth, gratitude, and a shared memory of a deeply emotional time.
Romeo underwent surgery this week at Valley Children’s Hospital, and the entire Libbon Elementary community stands united in support as he recovers from the procedure.
Romeo’s bravery serves as a powerful reminder that even in the midst of life’s challenges, there is beauty in reunion, strength in kindness, and hope in the enduring smile of a very special boy.
